102 Best Job Boards [By Industry]

Best Job Boards

Most job board roundups list the big ones and while that’s great for some people, big doesn’t mean good when it comes to your job search. Today, I’d like to take a more sophisticated approach and discuss:

  • Which job boards make sense based on your job search goals;

  • The pros and cons of major job boards and niche job boards and when you should use each; and

  • Give you a list of job boards by industry and profession.

Do Job Boards Still Work?

Short answer: yes. But here’s why many people don’t feel that way. Most job seekers go to big job search websites like LinkedIn or Indeed. Indeed boasts that more than 225 million job seekers use its website. This seems pretty accurate given that when I looked at their organic traffic from search engines alone, it was slightly over 210 million. I would say there are probably more than 225 million people on their website every month.

But let’s compare that to the number of job listings. There are over 40 times the number of job seekers to job listings on this website. Most statistics say you have a 3% chance of finding a job on a site like this. There’s just so many people.

So this is why many people don’t feel job boards work and I suspect why some coaches tell people to stop using them and start cold calling and networking. That’s a topic for a different article though.

So sure, there are executive-level jobs and jobs with small businesses that may not be listed on job boards. Many people call this the hidden job market. However, the overwhelming majority of companies do advertise their jobs on various websites (including their own). And when I polled my recruiting colleagues this month, the majority of their hires still come from applications submitted to their job adverts.

So yes, job boards still work. The trick is knowing where to find the right jobs on the right websites. That’s where this article comes in.

Generalist Job Boards

When I say generalist job boards, I mean those that list every kind of job for anything anyone wants. There is no specialization. While larger generalist boards can have millions of job seekers on them every month, there are smaller ones that are less competitive. Here’s a list of big and small job search websites and what this recruiter thinks of them.

Google For Jobs (Recommended to Discover New Sources of Jobs)

While technically not a job board, Google for jobs pulls jobs from all across the internet into one centralized place. It’s essentailly a job search engine.

What’s really cool is that when you click on a job, it will show you all the job boards that you can apply on. This helps you get a sense of where each company advertises roles and can lead you to new job boards.

To use Google for jobs just type in “job title” job and hit search on Google. It will show you a snippet of jobs that you can then expand. I always start a job search here.

Indeed (Recommended for Mid-Career and Non-Specialized Skills)

Indeed has become the largest job search website in the world, boasting over 225 million job seeker resumes. Indeed is unique because it is also a job aggregator which means it finds postings all over the internet and lists them on its site in addition to companies who advertise directly with them.

Because of this, you can find almost anything with ease and quickly. The downside of course is that because of that ease, everyone uses the site. I personally find it difficult to envision a job search that doesn’t make use of this website at least once a week, especially if you’re mid-career.

Another great thing about Indeed is that you can very easily set targeted search parameters into a job alert that will email you new listings so you don’t have to go and crawl the website every day. You can set your parameters in the search and then ask it to show you all new jobs within the last 24 hours. Then you’ll be shown the latest jobs to apply to.

If you’re mid-career and searching for a job that isn’t highly niche, this is a site I would recommend.

ZipRecruiter (Recommended for Mid-Career and Non-Specialized Skills)

ZipRecruiter is arguably the second most popular job board employers use to find talent next to Indeed. Their model is similar to Monster in that employers pay a flat fee to post job openings rather than the bid model of Indeed. This makes it very appealing to employers who want certainty in what their investment will produce for them - 30 days of advertisement.

Today, there are approximately 9 million active jobs posted on ZipRecruiter which makes it hard to ignore as part of an effective job search.

LinkedIn (Recommended for Highly Technical Jobs and Those Searching for Large Organizations)

Employers can post 1 job on LinkedIn for free. Employers pay for LinkedIn job postings similarly to the Indeed.com model which is a daily bid. They set a daily budget and based on that budget and the competition, LinkedIn determines when to advertise that job.

LinkedIn is one of the most expensive sites for companies to advertise jobs and find candidates on. Our recruiter account costs us over $10,000 per year and the job ads are more expensive than most other sites too. Typically you find larger companies and independent recruiters sourcing talent on this website. If that’s your target, consider it.

LinkedIn can be a very crowded place with some job openings reaching over 1,000 applicants within the first day.

Another good way to find out whether LinkedIn is a job site you should use is to look at how they break down job functions for employers posting jobs. Below is the list. If you see your job function here, this site could be a place you want to set up job alerts and frequent every week.

LinkedIn Job Functions:

  1. Accounting

  2. Administrative

  3. Arts & Design

  4. Business Development

  5. Community & Social Services

  6. Consulting

  7. Education

  8. Engineering

  9. Finance

  10. Healthcare

  11. Human Resources

  12. Information Technology

  13. Legal

  14. Marketing

  15. Media & Communications

  16. Military

  17. Operations

  18. Product Management

  19. Program & Project Management

  20. Purchasing

  21. Quality Assurance

  22. Real Estate

  23. Research

  24. Sales

  25. Support

I’ve found that those individuals with very specialized skills fare the best on LinkedIn. Where I see the most success is not with LinkedIn job ads, but rather with recruiters sourcing and finding job seekers based on their profiles. If you’re going to use LinkedIn, take the time to update your profile so recruiters start messaging you for the right jobs.

One service I recommend is TopStack Resume. They are a resume-writing company, but they also do LinkedIn profile updates. The best thing about them is you don’t pay up front, but only after you’re satisfied with the work. They’re the only company I know that does this.

Monster (Worth Checking Out)

Monster.com was a leading job board when I was an early career job hunter. It’s changed dynamically since Randstad purchased it in 2016. Unlike LinkedIn and Indeed which require employers to bid for advertisement space, Monster has a flat rate and will run a job for 30 days.

You’ll find a good blend of openings that are directly posted by companies and some with staffing agencies or recruiters on this site. Randstad has done a great job in revitalizing this job search website and acquiring new clients so you may find a good variety of companies on this job board.

CareerBuilder (Recommended for Finding Jobs With Staffing Agencies)

CareerBuilder used to be a robust site with thousands of companies posting their jobs here. They were one of the pioneers when job boards on the internet came into existence. Today, this job search website is filled mostly with job listings of staffing agencies and recruitment firms. If you’re looking for contract (temporary) work, this could be a gold mine of opportunity for you. However, if you’re searching for openings where you can apply directly to companies, you may find your time better spent on alternative sites like Indeed or ZipRecruiter.

Ladders (Recommended for Senior Level Jobs)

The Ladders job board lists jobs that pay around $100,000+ per year in the following areas:

  • Accounting and Finance

  • Engineering and Construction

  • Healthcare

  • Human Resources

  • Legal

  • Marketing, Media and Design

  • Operations and Management

  • Project Management

  • Sales

  • Science and Education

  • Technology

They have some premium features that cost $50/month, but you can view jobs and apply without paying. In the past 30 days, there were over 600,000 jobs advertised on their website; however, a large number were jobs that have been reposted for more than one month. That could mean a lot of things, but if you are looking for jobs paying over $100,000 in the above sectors, this would be a job board to visit.

Glassdoor (Not Recommended)

Glassdoor has really been an up-and-coming job search website especially because of its company reviews feature. Like anything you have to take reviews with a grain of salt, but they could help you get to know your next future employer before you decide to apply with them.

Glassdoor also shows salaries for positions similar to what you are looking for and many people use this site to research salaries. I’ve found that there are better sites for more accurate salary information.

The issue I have with Glassdoor is that everyone enters their company and salary when they sign up and because you can enter anything you want, it has very little credibility when it comes to accuracy. I could put in my VP title and state I’m making $30 an hour or $300,000 a year. No one is going to verify it. If you’re looking for salary information, sites such as Payscale.com offer much better information.

What bothers me the most about using this site is that it requires you to enter what I consider confidential information such as salary and a host of other personal information before you can even view job openings. That makes me nervous. It’s very intrusive and if you read the terms and conditions on the sites, you give them all rights to the information that you share with them. I prefer job search websites that let you view jobs first and then you can determine if it’s worth revealing your personal information.

GetWork (Not Recommended)

GetWork is part of Adzuna, a London-based job board. This job board was very hit or miss depending on what I was searching for. I found it to be ok when searching for government jobs and jobs at large corporations.

Many of the jobs were old. When I searched my local area, there were only 6 jobs at limited companies. If this was a specialized job board, I wouldn’t mind that too much, but it’s not.

One thing I thought was cool about this site was that it links directly to company career pages, but when I clicked on several of the jobs, it redirected me to a 404 page meaning that those jobs were no longer posted on the company website. Because the jobs aren’t current on GetWork, I can’t recommend it.

Simply Hired (Not Recommended)

In 2016, Simply Hired was acquired by the owner of Indeed. You can find similar jobs to Indeed on this site. For that reason alone, I didn’t put them in my recommended section. The interface is virtually the same as Indeed. In fact, many of the jobs will redirect you to an Indeed posting. I just don’t see why you’d waste your time here when you can go straight to Indeed.

Geebo (Not Recommended)

Geebo is another classified site that supposedly redirects you to a career page to apply, but I found that unlike Craigslist where employers directly post openings, Geebo scrapes the web for its jobs and many of them aren’t current.

Classified Job Boards

I used to tell people that you had to be more careful using classified advertising sites for jobs because of scams, but it seems these days scam jobs are everywhere, even on Indeed and LinkedIn. I’ve used classified job boards in the past to find opportunities, especially with small businesses. Because classifieds are much cheaper than generalist job boards, many smaller organizations will list their jobs here.

Craigslist (Recommended for Jobs With Small, Local Businesses)

Many people think of Craigslist jobs for trade roles, like plumbers, but I’ve had many people find professional roles in accounting here too. This site typically works well if you’re looking for local, smaller businesses to work for. It also tends to have more “transactional” or mid-career roles.

For example, you’re probably not going to find your next Controller or Director of Project Management job on this site, but you might find your next job as a Staff Accountant or a Project Coordinator.

What I do appreciate about this site is that you can typically email the hiring manager directly and sometimes they’ll even list their phone number for you to call them. Job searching on classifieds just seems like less red tape and bureaucracy.

There are other classified job boards out there such as Geebo, but I find Craigslist is the best.

Staffing Agency Job Boards

Staffing agencies and recruitment firms are a great place to find employment. While many people think of these companies when looking for temp job opportunities, they also can permanently place you with their clients directly. Most agencies will advertise openings on other job boards, but they also have a listing of their jobs on their own career pages as well.

Part of an effective job search should involve working with at least one or two recruiting partners.

LHH

Lee Hecht Harrison (LHH) has a career page with temporary and direct-hire work. They specialize in accounting and finance, legal, customer service, health and life sciences, human resources, supply chain, engineering, sales and marketing, and information technology. If you’re looking for a job in any of those sectors, this could be a place to frequent.

When I last checked, they had about 2,000 jobs they were recruiting for nationwide.

Robert Half

Robert Half too has a career page where you can find temp and direct-hire work. You will find jobs in accounting and finance, administrative support, legal, technology, and marketing jobs. If you’re looking for a job in any of those areas, check out this job board.

Randstad is a company based in the Netherlands with a solid US presence. They have a lot of temporary work but also some direct-hire jobs that they work on too. They have a diverse set of jobs in manufacturing production, administrative support, transportation, life sciences, sales, legal, non-clinical healthcare, and several others.

When I checked their website, they had around 5,000 jobs listed nationwide.

Adecco

Adecco is one of the largest staffing agencies in the world. You can find everything from nursing jobs to industrial mechanic job openings on their job board. Unlike some of the other companies listed in this section, Adecco is more of a generalist agency and their job board reflects that by having all kinds of jobs.

When I last checked they had around 2,500 job openings nationwide.

Manpower

Manpower is a large US staffing firm. Many of the jobs you’ll find on their careers page are lower paying such as administrative assistants and machine operators. But they do have some finance and engineering jobs as well. This is a good job board for those in trade jobs or looking for jobs that do not require a college degree. They have some specialized positions, but the vast majority are trades and non-degree required roles.

When I checked their website, there were 1,800 jobs nationwide.

Aya Healthcare

Aya is a staffing firm for travel nursing. You can find per diem jobs on their website. While they specialize in nursing, you can also find non-clinical roles, healthcare leadership jobs, and locum tenens. If you are in the healthcare field, this is a job board I would take a look at.

Snagajob

You can find retail jobs, warehouse jobs, and many others that pay by the hour on this website. You’ll find a high concentration of jobs in restaurants, retail, and hospitality.

Individual Company Websites

It’s also a good idea to start building a list of companies that you want to work for and visiting those company’s career pages directly. Erin Riska suggests visiting company career pages daily because one way to improve your odds of getting an interview (assuming you are qualified) is to apply early.

Many companies post on third-party sites, but there is an advantage to being one of the first 50 to apply and most of the time jobs are only published to third-party sites once every 24 hours meaning if you wait, you may be late to the party.

Rebecca Apostoli recommends using an app such as Web Alert that will send you an email once a company updates a job on their careers page.
