How to Use AI For an Interview [5 Tools Your Peers Are Using]
Many people don’t realize that their peers may have an unfair advantage at interviewing because of AI Copilots. AI is still fairly new and many people have started to use it for research and interview prep, but some people are using it for much more than just the prep work.
Today I want to discuss all the many things you can (and should) be using artificial intelligence for when it comes to interviews.
Research
This is probably the most common application of AI when it comes to interviews among job seekers. The two most common AIs I hear people use are Google Gemini and Chat GPT for research. Both are great for getting the deets on any company or interviewer fast. I prefer Gemini, but you do you.
Berndatee Pawlik, owner of Pawlik Dorman Consulting, and executive recruitment firm, suggests asking Gemini or GPT these questions:
Give me the history of Company X.
Give me a summary. of the analyst forecasts for Company X.
How does Company X compare to their competitors?
Compare Company X with Company Y (competitor).
What are the key developments in Company X in the last 5 years?
You can wade through hundreds of Google pages to do this on your own or you can leverage AI to make the research component of your job interview preparation much shorter. Are the answers perfect? No. But at what point does endless hours of research have diminishing returns?
AI Mock Interviews
It used to be that if you wanted to do a mock interview, you either had to ask a friend and pray they knew what the heck they were doing or you had to hire an interview coach. With Interview AI tools, you can prepare for an interview now with some pretty sophisticated mock interviewing on your own terms.
AI powered interview tools can give instant feedback and it’s self-paced, meaning if the only time you have is at midnight, you can do a mock interview then. These tools have come a long way in a short amount of time too. Many will allow you to upload a resume and job description and then tailor questions based on the two. That’s pretty incredible.
The AI then gives you feedback about how you can improve your answers and you can practice over and over again until you’re comfortable. And I’m not talking about analyzing grammar and how fast you talk. It can analyze how well you answered each question based on the content you shared.
I’ve reviewed dozens of AI Interview tools. Here are the ones I recommend for this.
Final Round AI
If you have some extra money to spend, this is the gold standard in mock interviews. It would be the equivalent of SEMRush in the marketing world, Salesforce in sales, or Workday in HR. Nothing is going to beat the capabilities of this program.
How this AI works is it asks you to upload a resume, a job description, and a company. Then it creates interview questions based on what you input so you’re not just getting common interview questions. An AI in the form of a human simulation comes up on the screen and asks you questions, then you answer.
I was quite impressed with how many different industries and roles it specializes in. There are easily over 100.
Once you finish answering all the questions during the mock interview, you can view a transcription of the questions and your answers along with suggestions on how to improve.
It will tell you if you answered questions directly or went off-topic. It will tell you if you provided enough evidence to make someone believe in your qualifications. It will tell you if you could have been more concise and organized with your answer.
It also ranks you on personal style, professionalism, skills, enthusiasm, and problem-solving ability and will give suggestions on how you can improve in each area.
Below is a snapshot of what the beginning of the report looks like after I completed a mock interview.
It is the most expensive Interview AI on the market. It costs $148 per month or $288 for 3 months. But it’s so worth it. If I was going to buy it, I would buy it for 3 months because it has other features you can use and this gives you unlimited access to everything. Considering you’d pay that for 1 hour with an interview coach, it’s a steal of a deal.
There are other mock interview AIs out there, but I haven’t found one that rivals Final Round’s accuracy and depth.
If you want to try it, they do offer a free trial, but it’s very limited. You can do 1 mock interview with 3 questions for free. You can try Final Round AI by clicking here.
Earn Better
While I do think Final Round is worth every penny, I also realize that even that price may be out of reach for some people. If you’re looking for a free Mock Interview AI, I would try Earn Better.
You can do unlimited Mock Interviews with their AI, but each one is limited to answering only 3 questions, and I didn’t find the questions quite as intelligent as Final Rounds (they were still good though).
It works in a similar fashion to Final Round where it will ask you to input a job description; however, it ignores your resume. This could be part of why I found it less accurate because it wasn’t using my resume as a roadmap for questions like a hiring manager (and Final Round) would do.
The reporting is less sophisticated than Final Round, but it’s still good. And considering that it’s free, it’s really good.
Earn Better can identify if you’re using metrics to measure the impact of your work, how well you are aligning your answers with the responsibilities of the job, how concise your answers are, how well organized and thought out your answers are, and whether you used industry terminology to show familiarity with the job.
At the end, you get a report that looks like the image below identifying what you did well and where your opportunities are to improve.
Pronounce
Pronounce isn’t necessarily an interview AI, but rather a speech AI that I think has a use case for interviews as well. If English is your second language, I highly recommend this AI; however, it’s also great if you want to speak more clearly and professionally.
The program will have you read a 2-minute narrative and then, based on that, analyze your use of filler words, pauses, speed, and pronunciation. At the end, it gives you a report that shows where you can improve your speaking skills in general.
This could also be a good first step for executives, or people who want to become executives, before hiring a speech coach.
Built into the program are also lessons to help you improve your speech such as avoiding overuse of the passive voice and avoiding sentence fragments while speaking. And if English isn’t your native language, it can guide you on tongue position and other tips to pronounce words correctly.
Below is a snapshot of the Pronounce report.
For the price of only $43 for 3 months or $130 for an entire year, it’s a great AI that can help with interview skills in a broad sense.
Also if you use an interview copilot during interviews and you’ve never used a teleprompter before, this is a must-have in my opinion because it will help you build teleprompter communication skills. If you don’t know what an interview copilot is, don’t worry, I’m about to cover that next.
You can try Pronounce for free and get a free speech report here.
AI Website People Use During Interviews
In the past year, interview copilots have been picking up steam and they’re not just used for coding interviews anymore. These tools act as a teleprompter during an interview. They can read the interviewer’s questions in real time and then use AI to generate a bullet list of items you should cover in your answer.
They’re fast, and they’re fairly accurate. The other great thing about the two I’m going to share with you is they allow you to take notes ahead of time and put your own notes into the teleprompter when the question is asked. If you don’t want to use AI answers, you can use your own and it will pull them up for you to read from.
Now there is a learning curve to this. If you’ve never read from a teleprompter before, you’ll want to practice sounding natural. I remember when I first started making videos. It took me a few tries to be able to read and sound natural with the right pauses, speed, and intonation.
But if you can do that, these tools can help you sound polished and organized.
In addition, they transcribe every interview for you so you have detailed notes. No more sitting there trying to remember what they asked you and what you said after the interview. You can review your interview transcription and then use that to craft better answers and improve your interviewing for the next time you get a similar question.
Yes, the people who use these tools correctly and proficiently have a huge leg up in my opinion. But if others are using them, you might want to consider doing it too. Interviewing is a skill that most likely has nothing to do with the job you’re applying for. You might as well use a tool to help you improve that skill faster. It might help you land a job sooner.
I spent some time trying out a few of these copilots and I only found two that were accurate and fast enough that I would consider using them again.
Final Round AI Interview Copilot
I already talked about using Final Round for mock interviews. Included in their everything package is unlimited interview copilots as well.
It syncs with all the major video platforms like Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet. It pulls the interview video into their platform and then shows transcriptions and pulls up answers on the right side. It looks like the image below.
After a question is asked, the right-hand side will populate AI-proposed answers based on your resume and job description, use your own notes that you created beforehand, and transcribe your answers. Pretty cool huh?
If you’re going to use Final Round AI, I would buy it for 3 months. They do give a discount for 3-month purchases and you’ll need the unlimited features to practice mock interviews and use it as a copilot during your real interviews. Because most job searches are taking longer, I would get the full benefit of a quarter instead of one month.
Sensei AI
While Final Round is the gold standard and has an extensive database, Sensei is an up-and-coming interview copilot. It has industry-specific databases for software engineering, data science, marketing, finance, product management, and healthcare.
It also is much more affordable than Final Round AI - only $89/month. So if you’re interviewing for one of those specific industries, you could save yourself some money with this tool.
Currently, it only operates as a copilot. There is no ability to do mock interviews like Final Round, but if all you want is a copilot, it’s good.
It operates very similarly to Final Round. You can craft interview stories and notes ahead of time or use AI to prompt talking points for you in real-time during the interview.
