Why did you leave that job?

If you’re trying to explain why you left each job on your resume, press the brakes!

Communication of such an important topic requires more than words alone. It requires tone of voice, body language, even your facial expressions. When you communicate in person about a topic such as why you left a previous job, all of these things are present and work together to help the interviewer empathize with you and feel connected to your story.

But on your resume, not so. It’s too challenging not to come across as whiny, picked-on, or just a rotten egg. So don’t give away your chance to use all of your communication tools to answer this question.

My advice: don’t even volunteer this information in an interview. And never, never mention disagreements, not getting along with others, bad bosses, or bad policies.

Need an updated resume? Need that edge to promote yourself in an interview and secure the job?
